Whether with a cone-shaped or an indented cold stream reflector at the hot end, the hot and cold streams are still interacting if the reflector is a heat conductor. The cold stream cools its while the hot stream warms. The reflector must be an insulator to stop such mixing and improve efficiency.
The hot stream reflecting off the flat surface at the cold end must also be on an insulated surface.
